Short Answer

No, but most people should start there, especially beginners. Tracking is one of the quickest ways to get where you’re trying to go, because it shows you what you’re actually eating instead of what you think you’re eating. Over time it becomes second nature, and you can start eating by feel.

Why Track at All?

Most guys have no real idea how much they eat. Tracking replaces guessing with numbers. You find out fast whether you’re actually getting your protein, and whether you’re eating more or less than your body burns.

How Long Should I Track?

Until hitting your numbers is second nature. Once you can look at a plate and know roughly what’s on it, the app becomes optional. For most people that takes a while, not a couple of weeks, so don’t rush it.

What Does “Eating by Feel” Look Like?

Think of your body like a daily checking account. Food is the deposit. Activity is the withdrawal. At the end of the day, you either ran a surplus or a deficit.

Say you hit legs in the morning, then go on a long bike ride or hike later in the day. That’s a big withdrawal, so you make sure you eat enough to cover all of it. Eating by feel means you know how to balance that account without an app telling you.

Surplus or Deficit: Which Do I Want?

It depends on your goal. Losing body fat means running a small deficit most days. Adding muscle means running a small surplus. Either way, you have to know which side of the account you’re on.

What If I Stop Tracking and Stall?

Go back to tracking for two weeks. It’s not a failure. It’s a reset that shows you where things drifted.

What I’d tell you: Tracking isn’t a life sentence. It’s how you learn to read your own account. Learn it well, and eating by feel actually works.
