Carbs are not the enemy. They are the energy. Cutting carbs makes the scale drop fast, but most of that is water and stored energy, not fat, and it can set you up for failure over the long term. What actually matters is your total intake and knowing when to eat more carbs, when to eat a balanced amount, and when to pull them back.
Why Does the Scale Drop So Fast When I Cut Carbs?
Your muscles store carbs as glycogen, and glycogen holds a lot of water. Cut carbs and you drain both, so the scale drops quickly. It feels like fat loss, but most of it is water, and it comes right back when the carbs do.
What Happens to My Training?
It suffers. I know mine does when I don’t eat enough carbs. Carbs fuel hard training, and flat, weak workouts make it harder to keep the muscle you’re working for.
Why Can It Set Me Up to Fail?
Cutting out a whole food group is hard to keep up. When the carbs come back, so does the water weight, and it feels like you failed even if you didn’t. That’s how people end up bouncing between diets.
So How Should I Use Carbs?
Understand what they are, what they do, and when to adjust them to your goal:
- More carbs when you’re training hard or trying to build muscle.
- A balanced amount on normal days to fuel your training and recovery.
- Fewer carbs when you’re running a deficit to lose body fat, without cutting them out.
Total calories decide whether you lose fat. Protein comes first. Carbs are the dial you turn up or down depending on your goal and how active you are that day.
What I’d tell you: Carbs are not the enemy. They are the energy. Learn when to turn them up and when to turn them down, and you’ll never need to cut them out.
Words You’ll Hear
- Glycogen
- The form carbs are stored in inside your muscles and liver. It’s fuel for hard training, and it holds water.
- Water weight
- Temporary weight from water your body holds onto, including the water stored with glycogen.
- Calorie deficit
- Eating less energy than your body burns. It’s what actually causes fat loss.
